New Exercise Design Online Curriculum

The EMI SIG is excited to announce the release of a new, refreshed and integrated set of online courses on DOE/NNSA Emergency Management’s approach to exercise design. These courses are designed for federal and contractor personnel involved in planning, developing, and implementing emergency drills and exercises. These courses form the foundation for the 3-day Exercise Design Lab (EXR 231) and make it possible for those with limited background in exercise design to hit the ground running when they enroll in EXR 231.

These five courses were originally developed almost 10 years ago by the EMI SIG Exercise and Drills Subcommittee and the Emergency Operations Training Academy as tutorials. The content has been updated and aligns to the new DOE O151.1d. The courses  use HTML5 and can be delivered on a mobile device. Extensive practice activities and a final test have been added so these courses are instructionally sound and a completion certificate is awarded when the learner passes the final exam.

The courses are:

EXR 131 E-WBT Fundamental of Emergency Management Exercise Design (1 hour)
This course is designed to provide the student with an overview of an effective approach to the design and development of exercises that meet DOE/NNSA requirements and guidance for ensuring effective exercise design.

EXR 132 E-WBT Exercise Builder (3 hours)
This course provides nine video modules that cover the major steps in developing an exercise using the Exercise Builder v8 software application. The YouTube style videos guides you through the major features and function of the application in a step-by-step, easy to follow manner. Self-guided activities are also included so that you can practice on the actual Exercise Builder v8 application.

EXR 152 E-WBT Developing Exercise Objectives (1 hour)
This course focuses on developing sound exercise objectives that form the basis for exercise development. The training guides the learner through a step-by-step process for developing operation-based exercises.

EXR 153 E-WBT Developing Exercise Scenarios (2 hours)
The course focuses on developing exercise scenarios, scenario materials, and control and evaluation guides for operations-based exercises.

EXR 154 E-WBT Basic Exercise Controller and Evaluator Training (1 hour)
This course focuses on the roles and responsibilities of the exercise controller and evaluator.
